On Friday, August 1, 2025, claims surfaced on social media alleging that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court had dismissed the case filed by Ghana’s suspended Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, challenging her suspension.

The claim was widely circulated by a TikTok account with the handle @thinker_news. The post, which included a photo of Justice Torkornoo, amassed over 3,000 likes and more than 300 comments. Many users celebrated the supposed ruling, praising the ECOWAS Court for allegedly throwing out the case.

Fact-Check Ghana has verified the claim and presents its findings below.

Claim: “ECOWAS Court Dismisses Chief Justice Torkornoo’s Legal Challenge Over Suspension”

Verdict: Completely False

Explanation: To verify the claim, the Fact-Check Ghana team employed a combination of verification techniques.

The viral image featured Justice Torkornoo alongside a logo labelled ‘Tinker News.’ However, a thorough online search by Fact-Check Ghana revealed that Tinker News has no identifiable digital footprint. There was no official website or verifiable contact information, and no trace of the story could be found beyond the artwork. The supposed media outlet appeared to exist only as a TikTok account.

Further investigations found no credible or mainstream media outlet reporting such a ruling by the ECOWAS Court.

Fact-Check Ghana contacted Justice Torkornoo’s legal representative, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana. He outrightly dismissed the claim, stating unequivocally that the ECOWAS Court had not delivered any ruling on the matter.

From the above, it is clear that the ECOWAS Court has not dismissed Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s legal challenge to her suspension. The claim is false and should be completely disregarded.
