False! Viral video of goalkeeper scoring own goal not related to Richard Ofori

On April 27, 2025, a user on X (formerly Twitter) posted a video suggesting that Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori deliberately scored an own goal. The post implied the act was intentional and called for FIFA to investigate.

The video was accompanied by the text: “FIFA should investigate Richard Ofori, wey kind of goalkeeping dx?”

Richard Ofori, who’s a former goalkeeper for Ghana’s senior soccer team, the Black Stars, currently plays for AmaZulu FC in South Africa’s Premier League. The 31-year-old joined the club in September 2024 after previously playing for Wa All Stars in Ghana, and later moved to Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates, all in South Africa.

In the 22-second video, a team wearing black jerseys and matching black shorts was attacking a team dressed in all white. The goalkeeper for the team in white, wearing a pink-striped kit, was seen on the ground trying to defend the goal but kicked the ball into his own net, sparking suspicions.

At the time of filing this report, the post has amassed 816 comments, 1,800 reposts, 5,700 likes, and 2,000 bookmarks on X. It was also widely shared on platforms like Facebook and TikTok, (here, here, and here) with similar claims suggesting Ofori may have intentionally conceded the goal while others are even alleging match-fixing.

Claim: Richard Ofori deliberately scored an own goal

Verdict: False

Explanation:

Fact-Check Ghana’s verification shows that the video in circulation is not Richard Ofori. The footage is from the Ukrainian Premier League match between Obolon Kyiv and Chornomorets Odesa in which the former won the game by a goal to nil.  The clip was taken from a match highlight posted on Obolon Kyiv’s YouTube page.

Using Google Translate, we discovered that the name on the back of the goalkeeper is in a Slavic language, which appeared to be “ANIAGBOSO”. Further Google search revealed that ANIAGBOSO’s full name is Chijioke Kingsley Aniagboso. He is a Nigerian national who plays for Chornomorets Odesa in Ukraine. Aniagboso, 21, joined the club in September 2024 after spells with Polissya and Zvyahel, also in Ukraine.

Also, one of the pitch-side advertising boards displayed the logo of Favbet, a betting and gaming company established in Ukraine in 1999. According to its official website, Favbet sponsors eight football clubs and sports federations, all based in Ukraine. These include Shakhtar Donetsk, Polissya Zhytomyr, Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih, Rukh Lviv, Obolon Kyiv, Left Bank Kyiv, the Fencing Federation of Ukraine, and the Basketball Federation of Ukraine.

Additionally, Ole! Football, a YouTube channel that compiles sports content, primarily football, quizzed whether the goal can be categorised as the “Most Ridiculous Own Goal of 2025?!” This gave rise to the claims that the goalkeeper had perhaps scored an own goal on purpose.

Therefore, from the above, it is clear that the video was falsely attributed to Richard Ofori, who had no involvement in the match or the incident shown.
