On Sunday, October 13, 2024, a video of a man sharing money with some people who seemed to be coming out of a meeting emerged on X. The video has the inscription “NDC sharing money to people of Volta Region just for votes”.  The TikTok watermark on the video showed that the handle, @gen.buhari_, was the source of the video.

As of October 14, 2024, the video had been deleted from the X handle. However, further checks show that the video is still on the TikTok account of the user who is noted to be a fan of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Fact-Check Ghana has verified the claim and presents its findings below.

Claim: “NDC sharing money to people of Volta Region just for votes”

Verdict: False

Explanation: In the video, a man clad in political party colours of red, white, green and orange is seen handing over money and canned drinks to people as they leave a room.

On the camouflage around his neck, an umbrella is seen on the material, indicative of an emblem of the political party. Also, on his shirt, the image of a female is seen with the words VOTE on the top.

To verify this claim, Fact-Check took screenshots of the video and conducted a reverse image search on Google. The search results showed exact matches of the screenshots taken. These led to Facebook posts, some dated November 07, 2021, with the caption “What’s going on here in eastern Nigeria”.

Another post with the same video on Facebook was posted on November 04, 2021, on the page nigeriansfornigeria.org. The video was accompanied by the caption “Ndi Anambra, say no to PDP this weekend. Vote Professor Chukwuma Soludo (APGA) 🐓🐓🐓”

When a search on Google was conducted with PDP Anambra election 2021 as keywords, again, the same video popped up.

An online search showed that PDP, the Peoples Democratic Party has its symbols and colors similar to that of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party’s emblem is an umbrella just like the National Democratic Congress. The Party’s colours are also similar to the NDC’s except that the NDC’s colours have black but the PDP’s does not.

That aside, the notes being shared in the video do not look like Ghana’s Cedi notes. They rather look like Niara.

Again, in the video, the man giving out the money speaks to a few of the people who receive the money. However, the dialect spoken is not any Ghanaian language. The Volta Region is predominantly an Ewe-speaking region, thus, one would expect to hear the Ewe language in the background if the video was indeed from the region.

Therefore the claim that the video shows the NDC sharing money to people of the Volta Region just for votes is false. The video has been online since 2021 and relates to the PDP Anambra elections in Nigeria. It has nothing to do with Ghana.
