Misleading! Madina MP has not been nominated for LGBTQ award

A flyer is circulating on social media platforms claiming that the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu, has been nominated for an LGBT Award in the United States of America.

The flyer, first posted on TikTok by @npp_tv on June 24, 2024, has emerged again and has garnered significant attention with 562 likes, 111 comments, and 32 saves at the time of filing this report.

Fact-Check Ghana has verified the claim circulating on TikTok and WhatsApp platforms and presents the details below.

Claim: NDC Madina MP nominated for LGBTQ Awards in USA

Verdict: Misleading

Explanation:

Fact-Check Ghana’s checks on the internet revealed that no major credible media outlet had carried a story or any report similar to the claims made on the flyer.

The flyers bore the logo and social media handles of EIB network, suggesting it was created by the media outlet. However, when Fact-check Ghana checked on the social media platforms of the news media, there were no traces of the flyer.

The team also contacted the Deputy Editor of EIB Network, Lansah Musah, who said it was fake and that the station did not create the flyer. He added that “some people have now found it convenient to use such templates for their mischief.”

Further search on the internet revealed that Francis Sosu received an international award for human rights advocacy and was nominated for the US Presidential Voluntary Service Award in June 2024 (See here).

From the above, the flyer is fabricated content. Even though the MP has received a human rights award and has been nominated for another award in the US, it is misleading to suggest that Francis Sosu has been nominated for an LGBTQ award.
