Claim that US Embassy in Ghana has been attacked and ordered to shut down false

On January 30, 2025, a Facebook page called Celebrity Blogger made a post claiming that some angry Ghanaians had attacked the US Embassy in Ghana. The post alleged that the embassy had been set on fire, with staff refusing to leave despite prior warnings.

“According to reports, US Embassy staff refused to vacate the premises despite multiple warnings following Trump’s alleged insults towards Ghanaians,” the post stated.

The post, which was deleted before this publication, garnered 195 comments and over 1,700 reactions.

Earlier, on January 25, 2025, Celebrity Blogger had also reported that the Ghanaian government ordered the US Embassy’s closure and the departure of 20,000 US citizens, including the Ambassador, in response to a so-called restriction imposed by the Trump administration.

However, Fact-Check Ghana’s verification shows both claims are entirely false. The US Embassy in Cantonments, Accra, has not been attacked or set on fire. Additionally, the Ghanaian government has not ordered the closure of the embassy or the repatriation of US citizens. Such a significant action would have triggered major local and international discussions and official communication from Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs—neither of which have occurred.

When contacted for clarification, the US Embassy confirmed that the claims were false and without merit.

In conclusion, claims about the embassy being attacked and ordered to be shut down, as well as the deportation of US citizens, are completely unfounded.
